ABOUT ABOUT

Join us for the next in our virtual program Stay at Home Speaker SeriesFREE to attend, this webinar will be a unique opportunity to hear directly from HMS Board Member Holly Merker!

If you have ever wanted to start to learn bird song, right now is a great time to start. With spring unfolding, most of our resident birds are in full song, heralding the start of the new nesting season. Picking out the songsters within the soundscape of your neighborhood is something we all can do. By using techniques and tips provided in this program, you will have the edge to approach learning this new language. We’ll also cover tips on identifying songs more than 30 of the most common birdsongs in eastern North America.

Holly Merker is a professional birding guide and environmental educator living in Downingtown, Pennsylvania. She has been teaching people the art of bird identification by sight, ear, and habitat, for the last two decades, in PA, Delaware, Maine, and Florida. Co-owner of the ID Boot Camp, and Ornitherapy, with ID Guide author Richard Crossley, Holly is also an instructor and session director for National Audubon’s Hog Island Camp in Maine, and has worked with teen birders instructing and direction the ABA’s Camp Avocet.  In addition, Holly serves as a mentor for the HMS Young Birders group, and a Co-founder and the Co-Chair of the Frontiers in Ornithology Symposium. Holly is passionate about hawkwatching, and has been a volunteer hawk counter for Hawk Mountain Sanctuary since 2013, and recently was elected to the Hawk Mountain Board of Directors. When not focusing directly on birds, she works as an environmental educator in Downingtown, PA, teaching freshwater ecology programs to school students.
